A car hit two pedestrians who were out for a walk at night on the Kaveri River bridge in Kudige on Friday night, killing one of them on the spot and seriously injuring the other.
Ravi (38), son of Basavayya and a resident of Poornachandra Baroda in the Kudumangalur Gram Panchayat limits, was killed in the accident.
Rupesh (28), son of Ramakrishna and Sharada, suffered a serious head injury. He was given first aid at the Community Health Centre in Kushalnagar and later shifted to Mysuru for further treatment.
The driver of the car that hit the pedestrians fled the scene in the vehicle.
A case has been registered at the Kushalnagar Rural Police Station. Police who visited the spot examined CCTV footage from the surrounding area and have begun an investigation to trace and take into custody the vehicle and the driver who fled after the collision.
Villagers protest
Village leaders and family members staged a protest by placing the deceased’s body in front of the Kushalnagar Rural Traffic Police Station. They demanded that the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident and fled the scene be arrested and brought before them. They also demanded immediate financial assistance for the injured person, who is undergoing treatment for serious head injuries at a private hospital in Mysuru.
Speaking on the occasion, Kushalnagar Circle Inspector Pradeep Kumar said all CCTV cameras in the area had already been checked and that steps had been taken to arrest the accused driver and seize the vehicle involved in the accident.
He said a case had also been registered against the driver and assured the protesters that justice would be served.
The villagers later withdrew their protest.
