Incessant rainfall continued to batter Kodagu district on Friday, triggering floods, landslides, road disruptions and damage to houses in several parts of the district. Strong winds accompanied by heavy rain and low temperatures have added to the hardships faced by residents. The Cauvery River is flowing in full spate in the Talakaveri and Bhagamandala regions. At Bhagamandala, floodwaters have inundated the Triveni Sangama and submerged the old Bhagamandala-Napoklu road passing through the park area. As a result, commuters are using the flyover for transportation.
A large boulder fell onto the Mangaluru-Madikeri National Highway near Kartoje in Made village, temporarily disrupting vehicular movement. The obstruction was later cleared, and traffic resumed.
More than six inches of rainfall was recorded in the Talakaveri region within a single day. Strong winds and continuous rain have disrupted electricity supply in Bhagamandala and Talakaveri, leaving several villages without power.
In Perur village near Napoklu, a portion of the house belonging to B. Monnappa collapsed due to heavy rain and strong winds. Revenue Inspector Ravikumar and his staff visited the spot and conducted an inspection.
Similarly, the wall of the house belonging to H.R. Manjula in T. Shettigeri village of SrimangalaHobli in South Kodagu collapsed due to the rains. In Made village near Madikeri, the rear wall of the house belonging to Koppadka Ramaiah also collapsed after a large quantity of soil slid onto the structure, creating panic among the occupants.
The retaining wall along the Monnangeri connecting road in Madikeri taluk collapsed, disrupting traffic before the debris was cleared. A landslide near Kalluthirike Temple at Kundacheri close to Bhagamandala caused electric poles to tilt dangerously, resulting in disruption of power supply. Another landslide in the same area blocked the village approach road.
Continuous rain has also affected normal life in Madikeri town, where persistent rain, dense fog and strong winds have caused inconvenience to residents.
Meanwhile, owing to heavy inflows into the Harangi Dam, more than 19,000 cusecs of water is being released into the river. The increased discharge has resulted in flooding in the downstream areas and has also created a spectacular view at the Rudra falls below the dam.
