Teacher Volunteers to Continue Serving School for One More Year
In an inspiring example of commitment to education, a government school teacher has voluntarily decided to continue serving her school for one year even after her retirement. M.T. Lakshmi, Headmistress of the Government Higher Primary School at Closeburn in Madikeri taluk, has taken this remarkable decision. After completing 32 years of service in the teaching profession, she retired on May 30. A farewell ceremony was organised at the school to mark the occasion, during which fellow teachers, members of the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) and former students felicitated her with gifts and mementos.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Lakshmi reflected on her teaching career, which began in 1994. She said that her service in various schools over the years had been made meaningful through the support and cooperation of fellow teachers, students, parents and local communities. She said that from the very beginning of her career, she had believed in actively engaging children in both curricular and co-curricular activities and had consistently worked towards that objective throughout her service.
Lakshmi explained that she had previously served at Closeburn School before being transferred elsewhere. When an opportunity arose for a transfer six months before her retirement, she chose to return to Closeburn School. She further announced that, even after retirement, she would continue to serve the school voluntarily for the next year. She said the decision was taken out of her affection for the institution and the children, and with the intention of supporting teachers and ensuring that students continue to benefit from curricular and extracurricular activities without disruption.
Speaking on the occasion, co-teacher Usha said that very few teachers displayed the same enthusiasm and dedication towards Nali-Kali activities as Lakshmi. Although government rules required her retirement upon reaching the prescribed age, her decision to continue serving the school voluntarily reflected her exceptional commitment and dedication to education, she said. Another teacher, D.M. Sujatha, recalled her long association with Lakshmi and praised her contribution to the teaching profession.
Former student Kishore Rai also spoke and noted that Lakshmi had a unique ability to identify hidden talents in children and nurture them by providing opportunities for growth and development. He recalled that many of her former students are today leading successful and respected lives in various fields because of her dedication and encouragement. Students of the school offered prayers during the programme. Teacher Jessie presented an overview of Lakshmi’s professional journey.
Among those present were Teacher Pragya, School Development Committee President Narayana, Vice-President Jayashree, parents, students and alumni of the school.
