Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekar has instructed officials to take necessary measures to protect groundwater resources and conserve lakes and other water bodies in Kodagu district. He was speaking while chairing a meeting of the District Groundwater Committee at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The meeting discussed groundwater development, conservation, and regulatory measures. The Deputy Commissioner directed that all activities involving groundwater extraction must obtain prior clearance from the Groundwater Directorate or the Karnataka Groundwater Authority.
Senior Geologist S. Sudha informed that no-objection certificate (NOC) applications have been received from several areas, including Galibidu, Makkandur, Yavakapadi, Emmemadu, Monnangeri, Kudige, Kumaralli, and Ponnampet, along with three additional applications submitted online. She stated that action is being taken against unauthorised borewell drilling by rigs not registered with the Karnataka Groundwater Authority.
Sudha also provided details on borewell performance in 2025-26, including the safe closure of failed borewells.
She noted that 45 observation wells-comprising 19 dug wells and 26 borewells-are being monitored monthly to record groundwater levels. One borewell in Kushalnagar and another in Virajpet have been closed due to site constraints.
Assistant Engineer Kumaraswamy from the Minor Irrigation Department informed that 98 borewells have been drilled under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe sub-plan during 2025-26.
Geologist Dixit from the Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Department presented findings from water sample tests conducted across the district, including detailed chemical analysis reports.
The Deputy Commissioner directed officials to conduct periodic water quality testing and ensure the supply of safe drinking water. He also instructed that surveys of lakes and water bodies be undertaken at the earliest.
