The district administration, in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture, commemorated the birth anniversary of Padma Bhushan General K.S. Thimayya in a solemn and meaningful ceremony held at the General Thimayya Memorial Museum Hall (Sunnyside) on Tuesday.
Chief Minister’s Legal Advisor and Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp and offering floral tributes to the portrait of the late General.
Addressing the gathering, Ponnanna described General KodanderaSubayyaThimayya as a courageous, strategic, and highly accomplished leader of the Indian Army. He highlighted that Thimmaiah, who served as Chief of the Army Staff from 1957 to 1961, played a significant role in World War II and the 1948 Kashmir conflict. He also noted the General’s contribution to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force

“General Thimmaiah’s discipline, integrity, and dedication continue to serve as a guiding example for future generations,” Ponnanna said.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Anand Prakash Meena emphasised the need to remember and emulate the General’s exemplary life and service. Superintendent of Police Bindu Mani noted that Thimmaiah’s contributions to the Indian Army remain unparalleled and should inspire the police force as well.
Additional Deputy Commissioner R. Aishwarya described General Thimmaiah as a towering national figure who played a crucial role in strengthening the Army during critical periods, including the Indo-China conflict.
Retired Army officer Gowdanda Thimmaiah provided insights into the General’s early life and illustrious career. Born on March 31, 1906, in Sunnyside, Madikeri, Thimmaiah received his education in Ooty, Bengaluru, Dehradun, and later at the Royal Military College in England. He joined the Indian Army in 1926 and distinguished himself as the only Indian officer to command an infantry brigade during World War II. He also played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the 1948 Kashmir operations and later served in the United Nations after his retirement.
Students added a cultural touch to the programme by presenting patriotic songs. Several officials, public representatives, and dignitaries were present on the occasion.
