Members of the Madikeri Nagar Congress staged a protest against the recent hike in domestic and commercial LPG prices by the Central Government.

Hundreds of party workers marched from Indira Gandhi (Chowki) Circle to the District Collector’s office, raising slogans against the Centre, the BJP-led administration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Speaking on the occasion, party leader Prakash Acharya accused the government of pursuing anti-people policies and warned that protests would continue until prices are reduced.

Campaign Committee Chairman T.P. Ramesh said LPG prices, which stood at around Rs 430 during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure, have now risen close to Rs 1,000. He criticised the BJP for its earlier protests over price hikes and alleged inconsistency in its stance.

District Congress spokesperson Thennira Maina stated that the Centre was attempting to justify the hike citing global conflicts, but recalled that even during the Iraq war (2003-2011), the  UPA government had shielded citizens from such impacts.

A memorandum was submitted to the Central Government through Additional District Magistrate Aishwarya, urging immediate rollback of the price hike. Several party leaders and workers participated in the protest.
