Karnataka Drug Dealers Association President R. Raghunath Reddy called for strict regulation of online drug trading, warning that unchecked online sales could lead to uncontrolled drug trafficking.

He was speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed two-storey ‘Farm Bhavan’ of the Kodagu District Drug Dealers Association in the city.

Reddy stated that while drug dealers are often subjected to scrutiny, illegal drug trafficking is increasingly taking place under the guise of online trade. He urged the government to take firm action to curb online drug transactions.

There are approximately 26,000 drug shops and 45,000 licensed drug dealers in Karnataka, he said, adding that members of the association function within legal frameworks and in a socially responsible manner.

He also suggested that the district association consider establishing a cooperative bank to support its members financially and expressed hope that the new building would symbolise unity among traders.

Kodagu Assistant Drug Controller Ajay Raj Shah advised members to work selflessly for societal welfare.

State Legal Advisor K. Harish criticised what he termed “unscientific laws” affecting traders and assured continued efforts to safeguard their interests.

District President Ambekal Jeevan Kushalappa described drug traders as “health protectors of society,” serving as a bridge between doctors and patients. He said the new Bhavan would strengthen unity and ensure welfare-oriented functioning.

Senior members were felicitated during the inauguration ceremony.
