“Everyone should understand the philosophy and ideals of the great humanist Sant Sevalal,” said G. Nandini, Art Teacher at Government Pre-University College, Kushalnagar.

She was speaking at the Sant Sevalal Jayanti programmeorganised at Gandhi Bhavan by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and the Department of Kannada and Culture.

In her address, she explained that the nomadic community is known by various names, including Banjara, Lambani, Lamani, Sugali, Sukali Gor, Sonar, Lohar and Bajigar. References to the Lambani and Banjara communities can be found even in the Mahabharata, and the community has a history spanning over 2,000 years.

She noted that Sant Sevalal made significant contributions to society and placed great emphasis on education, encouraging people to educate themselves and others.         Assistant Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, Kumar, said the government has implemented several welfare schemes for the Banjara and Lambani communities and urged them to utilise these benefits to integrate into the mainstream.

Geetha, Hostel Superintendent of the Social Welfare Department, highlighted the unique language, culture, customs and attire of the Lambani community. She observed that although the Banjara community has historically remained on the margins, it has been playing an increasingly important role in society in recent years.

Officials from various departments, staff members and students were present.
