The Kodagu district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society felicitated Anganwadi workers of Madikeri taluk at a programme held at the Red Cross Bhavan here, in recognition of their dedicated service to child welfare.
Inaugurating the programme, Madikeri Municipal Council President Kalavati said Anganwadi workers play a vital role in shaping children’s education, values and behaviour, and described them as the first teachers and caregivers in a child’s life. She stressed the need to nurture children with affection and care during their formative years.

Madikeri Urban Development Authority President B.Y. Rajesh lauded the Red Cross for its humanitarian service at both international and local levels, noting its assistance to the homeless during the rainy season and in times of crisis. He also praised Anganwadi workers for their significant contribution to providing a strong foundation for early childhood development.
Speaking on the occasion, Kodagu District In-charge Assistant Child Development Project Officer Mepadanda Savitha Kerthan highlighted the long-standing service of Anganwadi workers since the inception of the scheme in 1975. She pointed out that despite limited remuneration, Anganwadi workers continue to serve with commitment and play a crucial role in child nutrition, education and welfare. She said honouring such workers is essential, as they are instrumental in achieving government objectives related to child development.

Red Cross Kodagu President B.K. Ravindra Rai outlined the organisation’s global role in humanitarian service and peace-building, and highlighted the Kodagu unit’s relief work during rains, floods and the Covid-19 pandemic. He also said several initiatives, including health camps and blood donation programmes, would be taken up in the future.
Red Cross Vice President Anil H.T. said Anganwadi workers are central to improving the health and nutritional status of children below six years and strengthening the physical, mental and social development of children.
Red Cross Chief Executive Officer M. Dhananjay welcomed the gathering, Devakki rendered the invocation and Anil H.T. compered the programme. Several Anganwadi workers with long years of service from Madikeri taluk were honoured on the occasion in the presence of Red Cross office-bearers, directors and members.
