Architect Ponnachanda Naresh Medappa has won The Plan Award 2025 for his exemplary work on the Bangalore Hospice Trust’s “Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre” in Bhubaneswar. The prestigious international recognition was awarded yesterday in Milan.
Naresh Medappa, a well-known architect based in Bengaluru, is a partner at Mindspace Architects, a firm renowned for designing large and complex institutional, research, campus, and housing projects. His architectural approach is deeply rooted in nature, climate responsiveness, community engagement, and material integrity.
The award-winning project, designed by Medappa and his team at Mindspace, has been acclaimed for its sensitive and human-centric design. The hospice, located on a rehabilitated laterite quarry site, was praised by The Plan for its harmony with nature and its serene, healing environment.
According to The Plan, “The architecture, understated and earthy, slowly unfolds through an interplay of built and unbuilt spaces. At the heart lie six L-shaped in-patient wards around a tranquil waterbody. Buildings are clad in laterite stone once quarried on site, honouring the land’s history.”
Over the years, Medappa has received multiple honours for his architectural contributions, including:
- A+D Spectrum Award (2006) for Institutional Architecture
- JK AYA Commendation Award (2008) under the Public Building category
- JK AYA Commendation Award (2010) under the Group Housing category
- NDTV Design and Architecture Award (2014) in the Institutional category
- Winner (Jury Category) at the 32nd JK Architect of the Year Awards
Medappa’s recognition at The Plan Awards further reinforces his reputation as one of India’s most respected architects, known for blending contextual sensitivity with timeless design.

Congratulations to Naresh for doing such meaningful work and for being recognised by his peers for it. More power to him and best wishes for his future
