The Mahilodaya Mahila Union (ODP) recently staged a protest in Madikeri, demanding strict legal action to curb the increasing incidents of violence against minors, young girls, and women across the country, and seeking the death penalty for rapists.
Holding placards and raising slogans in front of the Kodagu Deputy Commissioner’s office, union members called for stronger enforcement of laws to ensure women’s safety.
Union Zone Coordinator Joyce Menezes stated that although both central and state governments have enacted laws to prevent atrocities against women, such crimes continue unabated.
She urged the government to implement stricter legal measures and ensure effective enforcement.
She also pointed out that the current pension amounts of Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,200 for widows, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities offer only limited relief due to rising living costs. She appealed for the pension to be increased to Rs. 3,000 per month to improve the lives of economically weaker sections.
The petition submitted to the government through the district administration included demands such as the death penalty for rapists and murderers, stricter action against gender-based violence, speedy trial of women-related cases, prevention of foetal sex determination with stringent punishment for violators, creation of safe environments for women at workplaces, and improved security around girls’ hostels.
Mahilodaya Women’s Union President Tara, members Lucy James, Vijaya Narayan, Mamata, Rita, Dhanu Kumar, Akshay, Meena Kumari, Chinnamma, Vilma from ODP Santhwana Kendra, Shweta, and others participated in the protest.
