Harish Acharya, State President of the Human Rights International Federation (HRIF), alleged that rules are being violated in the construction of layouts and buildings in Suntikoppa Gram Panchayat, and suggested that elected representatives and officials may be involved.
At a press conference in Madikeri, he warned of legal action if corrective measures are not taken. He claimed that in one layout, government land has been encroached upon, and in others, construction has exceeded approved limits. Facilities such as roads and drainage, which should have been provided by developers, are instead being borne by the Panchayat, leading to misuse of public funds.
He further alleged that a shed costing Rs. 8 lakh was constructed without a tender process, contrary to rules requiring tenders for works exceeding Rs. 1 lakh. He also raised concerns about violations in commercial building approvals.
HRIF members accused the Panchayat of negligence in failing to remove unauthorized panipuri carts at Kannada Circle, which were obstructing traffic and endangering schoolchildren. They also criticized the Panchayat for failing to hold regular Gram Sabhas, as required every six months.
Members G.N. Dinesh Kumar, K.A. Latheef, advisor Chowrira Ramesh, and others were present.
