The Kodagu Journalists Association held a condolence meeting at Patrika Bhavan to pay homage to Kalyatanda Ganapathy, the founding editor of Madikeri-Mysore Mitra and Star of Mysore. Ganapathy, who served as a journalist and columnist for 48 years, passed away recently, leaving behind a significant legacy in journalism and public service.
Senior journalist G. Rajendra, speaking at the event, highlighted Ganapathy’s commitment to unbiased reporting and his contributions to both social and environmental causes. He recalled Ganapathy as a cultured personality who never criticized or harbored ill will against anyone.
Veteran journalist B.S. Prakash shared his experiences of working as the Kodagu correspondent for Mysore Mitra for four years, noting Ganapathy’s generosity and humility in helping various organizations without seeking publicity.
B.G. Ananthashayana lauded Ganapathy’s patience in addressing the concerns of small newspapers and his efforts to document his experiences from travels across multiple countries. He also likened Ganapathy’s warm smile to that of the Dalai Lama.
Balaji Kashyap, Honorary Secretary of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Kodagu Centre, praised Ganapathy’s leadership as the former president of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mysuru. He remembered him as someone who welcomed suggestions, even from younger colleagues, and fostered innovation.
Senior journalist G. Chidvilas described Ganapathy as the “Bhishma of Mysore journalism,” stating it was no small feat to move from Kodagu and establish two successful newspapers in Mysore. He was also recognized for his role in Rotary and other social service initiatives.
Anil H.T., President of the Kodagu Journalists Association, noted Ganapathy’s remarkable achievement of writing columns in English for over four decades, seamlessly blending Mysuru’s media culture with Kodava traditions. He stated that many journalists trained under Ganapathy have gained national recognition.
Other speakers included S.G. Umesh, General Secretary of Kodagu Patrika Bhavan Trust, and Prasad Sampigekatte, Vice President of the Kodagu Journalists Association. Several media and community leaders were also present. Floral tributes were offered, and a moment of silence was observed.
