Environment Day was recently celebrated by the District Administration, Kodagu Zilla Panchayat (ZP), District Legal Services Authority, Education Department, Police Department, Forest Department, Horticulture Department, Bar Association, Bharat Scouts and Guides District Organization, Karnataka Rajya Vigyan Parishad in association with
St. Joseph’s School at the St. Joseph’s School compound.
After planting saplings Bharat Scouts and Guides District Chief Commissioner KT Baby Mathew said that protecting nature is everyone’s duty and it is necessary to provide a plastic free environment to the next generation.Â
Speaking further he said that good environment is important for human life. Water, air, food are the essence of nature. If air, water and food are good, our health will automatically become good. Therefore, a clean environment is necessary, he added.
Baby Mathew also said that World Environment Day is a very important event, it should not be limited to one day, but awareness should be created to realize the importance of nature. A better environment should be given to the next generation by abandoning plastic in full and added that it is everyone’s responsibility and environmental concern to maintain the planted trees safely.
He also said that it is also necessary to plant medicinal plants and organic vegetables must be planted in schools. He suggested that as the temperature is rising these days, during the rainy season, by opening the sluices, the flowing water should be absorbed into the ground and the water bodies should be conserved.
Speaking on the occasion, Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC) President Anitha Poovaiah said that the environment should be preserved by planting one tree every day and added that the attitude of cultivating plants and protecting the environment should be implemented by everyone.Â
Speaking further she said that we can breathe only when there is green environment. She also said that if everyone gives priority to the cleanliness of the environment, then they can give a better healthy environment to the next generation.
Presiding over the program, Madikeri City Municipal Council Member  Arun Shetty said that everyone should protect the environment and maintain cleanliness and he promised to give priority to the cleanliness of the school environment.Â
St Joseph’s School Superintendent Sister Roja, Primary Headmistress Sister Philomena, Madikeri City Municipal Council Member Mahesh Jaini, school teachers, staff and students were present.
In another program Hosmani Pundalik, Principal District and Sessions Judge flagged off the awareness jatha and planted saplings at the CMC Park. Students of various schools formed a human chain at General Thimayya circle, Madikeri on the occasion. The Gowri Lake near Omkareshwara temple, Madikeri was also cleaned on the occasion and many volunteers took part in the programme
Saplings were also planted at Anjaneya temple premises on the occasion. Students tried to create awareness by holding placards on afforestation, preventing plastic use and the value of water. M A Niranjan, District Bar Association president speaking on the occasion, said that it is very essential that we must plant many saplingsnow since our existence in future depends on them.
