Kodagu District In-charge Minister N.S. Bhosaraju has warned of heavy rain in the coming days and instructed officials to take preventive measures to avoid disasters.
The minister reviewed disaster management efforts during a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, following up on decisions made during the KDP meeting held on June 26.
Officials submitted reports on the structural condition of Anganwadis, schools, student hostels, and residential schools. The minister directed immediate action for necessary repairs.
Highlighting the damage caused by rains, the minister instructed engineers to urgently fill potholes across the district.
Chief Minister’s Legal Advisor A.S. Ponnanna expressed concern over the delay in completing last season’s rain-damage repair works. “Funds have been provided, yet work has not started. How can this happen?” he questioned.
Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja emphasized road repairs due to continuous rains, while Dharmaja Uthappa, President of the Guarantee Scheme Implementation Committee, called for maintenance of roads under the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Anand Prakash Meena assured that maintenance of roads, buildings, and Jaljeevan Mission projects is underway.
Minister Bhosaraju directed minor repairs for 71 Anganwadis and 1,154 schools. He emphasized that student hostels should be kept in good condition, without complaints.
The agriculture department was instructed to ensure the timely supply of seeds and fertilizers to farmers during the monsoon.
MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda urged officials to show compassion by providing basic amenities to residents in the Kannandabane area and suggested constructing roads in places where there are only stairways.
The police were directed to control the growing cases of marijuana use in Kodagu by strengthening beat surveillance.
In a press briefing later, Minister Bhosaraju reported that 77 houses were damaged in May-June rains and compensation has been distributed. Additionally, 2,364 electric poles and 22 transformers have been replaced.
He also highlighted the success of the Shakti Yojana, under which 1.20 crore women travelled in Kodagu alone, amounting to Rs. 50 crore in government spending.
