Liyakath Ali (69), a member of the executive committee of the District Kannada Sahitya Parishad, a member of the Kodagu District Writers and Artists Association, and a former Vice-President of the Madikeri Municipality, passed away recently following illness.
A resident of Hill Road in Madikeri, he is survived by his wife and two sons. His last rites were performed at the Khabarsthan in Ranipet later in the evening.
Liyakath Ali was known as a good singer and an active participant in various cultural and literary organisations, including the District Kannada Sahitya Parishad. He had played an important role in the installation of the statue of national poet Kuvempu at the park near Rajaseat Marg in Madikeri. He was also politically associated for many years and was known as a supporter of former minister M.C. Nanaiah.
The Kodagu District Kannada Sahitya Parishad expressed deep condolences over his demise. A condolence meeting was held at the Kodagu Patrika Bhavan auditorium in the city where members paid floral tributes.
District Sahitya Parishad President M.P. Keshav Kamath said that Liyakath Ali’s passing is an irreparable loss to the fields of literature and arts.
Kodagu District Congress President Tithira Dharmaja Uthappa, former Sahitya Parishad President T.P. Ramesh, Honorary Secretary S.I. Munir Ahmed and others also spoke and paid tribute.
Among those who attended and offered condolences were Kodagu District Scouts and Guides Commissioner K.T. Baby Mathew, Sri Omkareshwara Temple Committee President Chummi Devaiah, former Madikeri Municipal Council President Julekabi, City Congress President Prakash Acharya, Allaranda Ranga Chavadi Convener Allaranda Vitthal Nanjappa, teacher Suleman and several members of the Sahitya Parishad and the public. Former minister M.C. Nanaiah and senior litterateur S.G. Siddaramaiah also expressed their condolences.
