Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekhar stressed the need to create widespread awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse while presiding over the District-Level Narcotics Coordination Centre meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office hall.
DC expressed concern over the increasing presence of drug networks and emphasized the need to conduct awareness programmes in schools, colleges, and hostels to prevent youth from falling into addiction.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed departments including Health and Family Welfare, School Education, Pre-University and Collegiate Education, Social Welfare, Backward Classes Welfare, Tribal Welfare, Minority Welfare, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Youth Empowerment, and Labour to actively create awareness within their respective departments.
District Superintendent of Police Bindhumani stated that strict action must be taken against drug networks and emphasized heightened vigilance along district border areas.
SP instructed officials to conduct vehicle and passenger checks at interstate check posts.
She further suggested stocking drug testing kits in all government hospitals and conducting random tests in schools, colleges, and hostels wherever suspicion arises.
She informed that 58 drug-related cases have been registered in the district and approximately 2.5 kg of ganja has been seized.
Assistant commissioner and Deputy Director of Tourism Nitin Chakki suggested conducting random inspections in homestays. Health Officer Dr. Satish Kumar said awareness programmes are being organized under the Drug-Free India campaign.
Deputy Conservator of Forests Abhishek assured cooperation in monitoring border areas, while Assistant Drug Controller Ajay Raj warned that selling medicines without prescription is a punishable offence.
Officials from various departments, police officers, excise officials, and intelligence officers attended the meeting.
