The Codava National Council (CNC) has urged the Karnataka government to name Kodagu University after Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, India’s first Field Marshal.
CNC President N.U. Nachappa Kodava has submitted a memorandum to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Raya Reddy in this regard.

It is understood that Kodagu University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ashok S. Alur has proposed three names, including that of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa. The CNC, however, has maintained that Cariappa’s name would be the most deserving, appropriate and inspiring choice.
The memorandum described Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa as a distinguished military leader and a proud son of Kodagu, and said that naming the university after him would be a fitting tribute to his service to the nation.
The memorandum also referred to Cariappa as one of the four great Indian military figures cited in General V.K. Singh’s autobiography, *Courage & Conviction*. The other names mentioned were General K.S. Thimayya, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Lieutenant General Sagat Singh.Against this backdrop, N.U. Nachappa urged the Karnataka government to honour Cariappa by naming the institution “Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa University”.
