16-Year Wait Ends: Dr. Mantar Gowda instrumental in getting a new basketball indoor stadium in Madikeri

Hockey has long been synonymous with sport in Kodagu. However, in recent years, sports such as cricket and badminton have gained immense popularity among both the younger generation and older residents.

Kodagu has also produced exceptional talent in several team sports, including basketball. Unfortunately, many of these athletes have gone largely unnoticed. Even those who wish to give back to the sport by coaching and mentoring the next generation have often found themselves constrained by the lack of basic sports infrastructure.

Basketball players such as Konganda Muddaiah, Kechettira Ravi Devaiah, Karan Aiyappa, Mukul Mahindra, Arpan Poojari, Likith Bopanna, to name a few, have represented Karnataka. Others, such as Paradanda Buncy Bopanna, have gone on to represent India. It is to the credit of women that the district is known for accomplished basketball players, including Mandepanda Dr. Pushpa Kuttanna, Nandini Basappa, Maletira Seeth Devaiah, Kaliyanda Dr. Reshma Chengappa, Navaneetha Pattemane Udayakumar, Kelettira Harshitha Bopaiah and Kokkalera Lopamudra Thimmaiah, who have represented India. By any norm, this is a very commendable achievement.

For more than two decades, basketball has survived in Kodagu solely because of the relentless dedication and passion of its players. The Spartans Basketball Club, based in Madikeri, comprises players who have represented the state, universities and colleges. Several members continue to actively play in the A, B and C Division leagues conducted by the Karnataka State Basketball Association (KSBA) in Bengaluru. Spartans has also been organising free coaching camps for Under-16 students in Madikeri to promote basketball at the grassroots level.

Yet, when it came to public sports infrastructure, Kodagu’s basketball fraternity received little encouragement. Their repeated representations to successive governments and authorities went largely unanswered.

The Indoor Basketball Court at General Thimayya Stadium

The Indoor Basketball Court at General Thimayya Stadium now caters exclusively to badminton players.

Although a multipurpose indoor stadium housing badminton, volleyball and basketball courts was built at General Thimayya Stadium in 2013, the dedicated basketball court was unceremoniously converted into a badminton facility. Every monsoon, basketball players were left at the mercy of the weather, waiting for brief breaks in the rain to squeeze in a few minutes of practice on the outdoor court before another downpour arrived. Once the heavy monsoon set in, the court became virtually unusable.

The dismal state of the outdoor basketball court at General Thimayya stadium, during monsoon.

The players often found themselves cleaning the outdoor court before every practice session. After each monsoon, players had to remove weeds and grass that had sprouted through the cracks in the neglected playing surface before re-cementing the damaged sections, simply to restore the court to a playable condition.

A group of senior players from Spartans and Marshall’s Basketball Club had approached an official of the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), at Madikeri, requesting permission to use the indoor basketball court on certain days, while allowing badminton to continue on the remaining days. Their request was rejected. It was stated that orders had been issued permitting “only badminton” to be played there. However, when the players requested a copy of the order, none was produced.

Despite the setback, the members of the Club refused to give up. For nearly 16 years, they continued submitting representations to elected representatives and government authorities, but with little success. The players also brought the issue to the the attention of well known journalist Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa, who published reports highlighting the poor condition of the outdoor basketball court and the lack of maintenance by the DYES. His reports drew attention to the issue. Although the officials subsequently assured that they would initiate correspondence with the government, and some communications were indeed sent, little tangible progress was made.

Finally, MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda Comes to the Rescue

During the Madikeri Dasara celebrations, sporting events are traditionally organised at the General Thimayya Stadium. On one such occasion, when Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda attended the event as Chief Guest, one of the basketball players took the opportunity to bring to his attention the dismal condition of the basketball court.

The MLA patiently heard their concerns, personally inspected the outdoor court and assured the players that he would look into the matter.

True to his word, Dr. Mantar Gowda facilitated the sanctioning of a dedicated semi-indoor basketball stadium through the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports at the site where the deteriorating outdoor court stood.

For Kodagu’s basketball fraternity, the project represents the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream after nearly 16 years of persistent efforts. It also marks the end of years of hardship faced by generations of basketball players.

The Current Status of the under-construction Semi-Indoor Basketball Court at General Thimayya Stadium

Construction is currently underway and is expected to be completed within the next five months. Members of Spartans Basketball Club are closely monitoring the progress of the work and regularly updating the authorities and the MLA to help ensure quality standards are maintained.

Once completed, the semi-indoor stadium will enable year-round training and competition, providing aspiring players with a modern, professional environment to develop their skills, enhance their performance and prepare for competition at the district, state and national levels.

The Future of Basketball in Kodagu

The Spartans and Marshalls Basketball Club plans to utilise the new facility to organise free coaching camps for aspiring players. The club also intends to collaborate with schools in Madikeri to conduct summer coaching camps for children.

For schools and colleges that already possess basketball courts but lack qualified coaches, the club proposes to provide coaching support and technical guidance to train students. The club also envisions organising regular inter-school, inter-college, inter-city and inter-district tournaments in collaboration with other basketball clubs, including Basketball Club, Gonikoppal (BBC), Avengers Basketball Club, Virajpet, Coorg United Basketball Club, De Coach and Teagle Hoopsters, Ponnampet.

The larger objective is to popularise basketball among a wider section of Kodagu’s population, inspire greater participation in the sport, encourage children to spend more time on the court rather than on mobile phones, foster an active and healthy lifestyle, keep them away from the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse, and nurture future players who may one day represent the district, the state and, ultimately, the country.

  1. All our – Spartans and Marshall’s hard work finally paying off 🙌🏻
Thanks to everyone who have supported us from the past 10 years.
A special thanks to our dear MLA for making this possible.

  2. Heartfelt congratulations to the people behind this wonderful initiative. After such a long wait, Madikeri basketball players finally deserve a proper facility to grow, train, and compete with pride. Special appreciation to Dr. Mantar Gowda for listening to the players’ concerns and taking timely action. As a former university-level basketball player myself, I know how much a good court means to a player’s confidence, development, and passion for the game. This is truly a big step for Kodagu’s sporting future.

Thanks to CLN for highlighting this initiative…

  3. It is really heartening to see Kodavas being written about in fields other than Hockey. I find CLNs’ unwavering sports news reporting on Badminton (Diya Bheemaiah), Golf (Aida Thimmaiah), Shooting (KALS) and now basketball particularly refreshing.

  4. This is such a terrific outcome for a determined effort by the dedicated basketball players in Madikeri. Well done!

  5. Thank you Mr Machaiah and Coffeeland News for a comprehensive coverage of a near 2 decades struggle. A note of gratitude to the respected MLA Dr Mantar Gowda for ensuring the funds are sanctioned this time from the government and checking in regularly on the progress. We hope and wish this is the dawn of a great basketball culture in the district. One of my personal regrets is that all the sports persons hailing from Kodagu who have achieved great success at international and National levels, either did not hone their skills in Kodagu or had to leave Kodagu at some point in their life to bigger cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai or outside the country to ensure their skills elevated to the next competitive level. Wish this trend changes and sports persons and athletes could sharpen their skills in Kodagu itself with the right infrastructure, coaching and mentorship. We need more and more people from Kodagu to pursue careers in sports like Officiating, Coaching, Sports Medicine, Nutrition and Recovery, so that one day our athletes don’t have to think of leaving the district to become better version of themselves. We need a dedicated sports budget for the district, else it’s better to shed the tag of “cradle of sports”.

  6. A much needed step for Kodagu’s sporting community. Infrastructure creates opportunities, and hopefully this inspires more young athletes to take up basketball. Wishing for timely completion and proper maintenance.

  7. My 14 year old son plays for Mounts Club in Bangalore. He loves Coorg, and we visit Madikeri often during our vacations. It’s wonderful to know that he will now have a dedicated place to practise and enjoy the game during our visits.

  8. Most of the kids and adults love to play basketball in Kodagu. Even in monsoon, people come to play, no matter if they get wet. A semi-indoor basketball court is a great amenity for all of us. Waiting for the court to be done. Can’t wait to play on a better court in Kodagu, and also excited for tournaments.

  9. Every basketball enthusiast from Coorg owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Mantar Gowda who made this possible. Thank you for supporting the sport and its future.

  10. From practising under the scorching sun and monsoon rains to finally having an indoor court – what an incredible journey. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

  11. Great to see this. Lots of talented basketball players from Kodagu. Definitely a step in the right direction to promote basketball and make facilities available for our talented athletes.

  12. As someone who has seen players struggle with inadequate facilities for years, this is truly a historic day. Thank you Dr. Mantar Gowda for making it happen.

  13. It is difficult to understand how things work in the name of “benefitting” the people. The Administration spends Crores on organizing the Dussehra Festivities in Kodagu and yet basic infrastructure is lacking; so is the case with promoting tourism without understanding the implications on natural resources.
This extends to sporting infrastructure – with the obvious innate talent that exists for sports like basketball, shooting, athletics, swimming and many more sports – it is perplexing why adequate earmarking of funds is not done in the District’s budget. The simple answer could be that if we do not make a proper list of requirements before budgets are frozen, the community’s priorities do not get attention.

Credit to Dr Mantar Gowda for his earnest support.

  14. Extremely well articulated by Machaiah – one of the best writings that I have seen on sports journalism in a long time. Every point made is factual, concise, without any extra emotion, and yet every “baller” in Madikeri should feel elated.

It is really good to see the encouragement by Dr. Mantar Gowda. Without any offence to the preeminent position that Hockey gets, the residents of Kodagu have excelled in most fields of sport and in this instance the Kodavathis’ have really made us proud by the number of women who have represented the country with their own initiative and inborn talent.

  15. This feels so surreal. I had commented about this and more on a different post – https://clnews.in/2026/04/24/rethinking-the-family-hockey-namme-in-kodagu/#comment-2506

As someone who grew up playing basketball in Madikeri, I am genuinely happy to see that the town is finally getting a dedicated basketball court. It’s been a long time coming.

I hope this is just the beginning, and that other sports like football also get the infrastructure they deserve in Coorg. Kudos to Dr. Mantar Gowda for making it happen.
