The graduation ceremony of fifth-year medical students who completed their MBBS degree at the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences was held on the college premises.
Dr. Raj Narayan Tiwari, Director, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Environmental Health Research, Bhopal, attended as the chief guest and congratulated the medical graduates. He also expressed gratitude to the organizers.
In his address, he stated that the medical profession is not limited to providing treatment but also carries a larger responsibility towards society.
He emphasized that compassion and humanity towards patients reflect the personality of a doctor and observed that people approach doctors not only for treatment but also based on trust.
Stressing the importance of community medicine in postgraduate studies, he said that research in the field of medicine should be given high priority. He highlighted the importance of evidence-based medicine in the present times and noted that there are increasing opportunities for research in the country.
He further stated that the role of doctors is crucial for India to become a developed nation by 2047, and that young doctors bear the responsibility of maintaining the health of the country. He also advised doctors to remain vigilant about their own health and to act as ambassadors of environmental protection, especially in the context of global warming and environmental degradation affecting the health sector. He stressed the need to adopt sustainable practices.
Speaking as a guest, Kodagu District Guarantee President T.M. Dharmaja Uthappa conveyed his best wishes to the graduates and expressed hope that those completing their MBBS studies in the scenic environment of Kodagu would be blessed by Mother Cauvery to build a better future. He remarked that after God and parents, doctors are among the most respected members of society. He stated that the service of doctors plays a vital role in shaping the nation’s future and urged them to uphold the dignity of the profession without succumbing to any pressures.
On the occasion, Dr. Jayaram, who has been contributing to medical colleges for the past 25 years, along with his wife, who hails from Kodagu, deposited an amount of Rs 2,50,000 in the college as a memento. From the interest accrued, Rs 10,000 will be awarded to students securing first rank in the postgraduate department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Director and Dean of the institution Dr. Lokesh A.J., Principal Dr. Vishal Kumar, Chief Administrative Officer Rohini K.M., Medical Superintendent Dr. Somashekar, District Surgeon Dr. Nanjundaya, Academic Registrar Dr. Ravikiran Kisan, Heads of Departments, and faculty members were present on the dais.
A total of 150 medical students received their degrees and graduated as doctors.
