Forest Biology and Environment Minister Eeshwara B Khandre informed in the Legislative Council that, to control elephant-human conflict, 7 km railway barricades have been sanctioned for Madikeri division and 20 km for Nagarhole division in 2025-26 and work will begin soon.
The Minister was responding to Suja Kushalappa’s proposal during Zero Hour, the minister said that a 17-year-old girl living on the edge of the forest died in an elephant attack on Feb. 28, a 55-year-old tribal woman living inside the forest died on Mar. 9, which is a very painful thing.
Life is very precious, there is no way to put a price on it. The Forest Department is taking all measures to prevent man – animal conflict. Elephant control ditches and solar electric fences are being maintained. 2 elephant task forces are working and added that now the Chief Wildlife Warden has ordered to capture 2 wild elephants, he said.
In both these cases, Rs. 5 lakh compensation has already been distributed to the close relatives of the deceased, and the remaining Rs. 15 lakh each will be given within a week, he said.
Eshwara Khandre also assured that the government is also making sincere efforts regarding permanent relief measures to control elephant-human conflict.
