A protest march and public meeting were organised by the Congress in Virajpet recently as part of the “MNREGA Bachao Sangram,” alleging reduction of central support to the rural employment scheme.

Addressing the gathering, MLA A.S. Ponnanna stated that the scheme had significantly benefited rural and backward communities and alleged that reduced central funding had adversely affected its implementation. He said the agitation would continue until full support is restored.

KPCC spokesperson M. Lakshmana and other leaders criticised the Centre’s policies, while State Sports Authority Vice-President C.S. Arun Machayya termed the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme as condemnable.

District Congress President Dharmaja Uthappa and several party leaders were present.

Prior to the meeting, party workers took out a march through major roads of the town, raising slogans and demanding effective implementation of MNREGA.
