The Kodagu District BJP has appealed to Kodavas to mention “Hindu” in the religion column, “Kodava” in the caste column, and “Kodava” in the language column in the ongoing state caste census, to avoid any confusion.

In a press release, District BJP President Napanda Ravi Kalappa expressed displeasure over attempts by some organizations in Kodagu district to create confusion by calling for Kodavas to be listed under “Kodava religion” in the religion column.

He stated that since ancient times, Kodavas and Kodava speakers have worshipped nature and Gurukarona and have identified themselves as part of Hinduism. The customs, traditions, attire, and food habits of the Kodavas are distinct, but they are also integral to Hinduism. He added that the headmen of most temples in Kodagu are Kodavas, and they worship Hindu gods.

He further pointed out that in all records, Kodavas have historically been documented as Hindus. Therefore, during the caste census, there should be no confusion, and the details should be entered clearly as Hindu in the religion column, Kodava in the caste column, and Kodava in the language column.

He alleged that the state government is attempting to divide Hinduism and claimed that efforts are being made to include Christians under caste listings for Scheduled Castes, Tribes, and Backward Classes. According to him, this is an attempt to extend the benefits of education, economic support, and job reservations meant for these groups to those who convert to Christianity.

He strongly condemned this move and said it would be opposed.
