Coffee Prices Play Hide and Seek: The Threat of Severe Rains in August Looms

Comments:

As the global coffee market continues to experience sharp volatility, Arabica prices are surging while Robusta prices have sunk to a 16-month low – leaving both traders and growers wondering which brew will win the battle of margins. But looming over this economic drama is a graver concern: the dark monsoon clouds threatening to once again flood Kodagu, Karnataka’s coffee heartland.

Arabica Ascends, Robusta Retreats

Arabica coffee, favoured globally for its smoother, milder flavour, has climbed in international markets due to erratic weather in key producing nations like Brazil and Colombia. Prolonged dryness followed by unexpected rains have disrupted harvesting cycles, affecting yield quality. According to the latest report by Tata Consumer Products Ltd. (TCPL), Arabica prices have risen over 40% in the past year.

According to TradingView – Robusta futures, on the other hand, has plunged – falling to a 16-month low. The reasons are twofold: strong supply from Vietnam, the world’s top Robusta producer, and subdued demand from roasters who are cautiously restocking. The TCPL report points out that Indian Robusta farmers are facing a double whammy – lower prices and higher input costs.

“Exporters are feeling the pinch. Arabica has become too expensive to source, while Robusta is abundant but undervalued,” noted a senior trader in Bengaluru. The divergence in pricing is creating an uncertain landscape for growers, especially smallholders who rely on predictable cycles and margins.

Kodagu on Edge: Will Memories of 2018 Return ?

Closer to home, Kodagu district is holding its breath as August nears. With below-normal rainfall recorded in July this year, meteorologists and district administration are warning of a potential surge in rainfall in August, mirroring the disastrous patterns seen in 2018. That year, relentless rain and landslides destroyed plantations, homes, and lives – bringing the district’s economy to a grinding halt.

If such conditions repeat, coffee planters could face severe losses. As many farms in Kodagu are located on hilly terrain, excessive rainfall can cause root rot, cherry drop, and landslides, severely damaging both Arabica and Robusta crops.

“Every August feels like Russian roulette,” said a grower from Napoklu. “The prices might rise or fall, but if the fields are under water, nothing else matters.”

Indian Market Dynamics

In India, the consumption of coffee is steadily rising, particularly in urban centres and among younger consumers. TCPL’s report noted that the domestic demand is growing even as global uncertainty looms. However, this uptick in demand may not immediately translate into better prices for growers due to supply chain constraints and international price pressures.

Indian exporters are now walking a tightrope. With Robusta prices falling globally and Arabica becoming too expensive for bulk trade, finding a profitable balance has become challenging. Add to that the logistical disruptions a potential flood could cause, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Coorg In August Company

While coffee prices continue to play hide and seek, Coorg’s planters are bracing for more than just market swings. If August brings the feared deluge, it won’t matter whether Arabica is soaring or Robusta is diving.
Kodagu’s coffee economy will once again be at the mercy of the skies.
