We have had a number of outstanding sports personalities featured in our columns. We are particularly proud to showcase Rachith’s academic track record culminating in his being awarded a Doctrate in Informatics. We wish him the very best in furthering his ongoing achievements.
The Coorg Education Fund (CEF) under the stewardship of Mr K P Uthappa set new standards of recognizing and supporting this extraordinary talent. We hope to feature more such outstanding Kodava talent in all fields. While the community quietly basks in the sunshine of their achievements, it is important that these young icons guide and mentor fellow youngsters with potential. It is hoped that Organisations like CEF, Akhila Kodava Samaja and the vast network of powerful Regional Kodava Samajas (including the diaspora) lend support to this initiative.
It must be remembered that pioneering, path breaking Education initiatives by our elders in Coorg provided a phenomenal competitive platform to the community. As a priority, we have to raise the bar in providing infrastructure for higher education within Coorg to our youngsters – similar to what has been achieved in South Canara/Tulunad.

Balladichanda Rachith Aiyappa has been awarded a Doctorate in Informatics (Complex Networks and Systems) from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, where he was affiliated with the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.
His dissertation, titled “Towards Empirically Validated Models of Belief Dynamics,” integrates concepts from physics, cognitive science, and natural language processing to explore how interactions between beliefs lead to large-scale societal phenomena such as polarization, consensus formation, and stereotype propagation.
Rachith’s research has been published in leading academic venues, including Science Advances, the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), Nature Human Behaviour, and the Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). He was also the recipient of the Luddy Excellence Award for his contributions as an associate instructor, alongside several grants and fellowships throughout his doctoral studies.
An alumnus of St. Joseph’s Central School, Mysuru, Rachith completed his pre-university education at Narayana College, Hyderabad, before graduating from BITS Pilani with a dual degree in B.E. (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering and M.Sc. (Hons.) Physics.
His academic journey has been distinguished by several notable achievements. In 2018, he was among 13 students across India to receive the prestigious Charpak Research Internship Scholarship, which facilitated his research on collective dynamics in biological systems at CNRS and the University of Toulouse, France.
He completed his Bachelor’s thesis at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and his Master’s thesis at Humboldt University, Berlin, both focused on emergent behaviors in complex systems. Prior to his doctoral studies, he also served as a Teaching Fellow at Ashoka University, Sonepat.
Rachith will now begin his professional journey as an Applied Research Scientist at eBay, California.
He extends his heartfelt gratitude to all the institutions, mentors, friends, and family members who have supported and shaped his remarkable academic and personal growth.
Beyond Academia
Rachith is a passionate tennis player, competing regularly at every opportunity. During his undergraduate years at BITS Pilani, he won multiple Goa Men’s State-level Tennis Tournaments, excelling in both singles and doubles categories.
While pursuing his Ph.D., he continued his involvement in competitive tennis, winning two ITA Summer Circuit tournaments – one in Fortville, Indiana, and another in Davis, California. These Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) events are part of the highly competitive collegiate tennis circuit in the United States.
Beyond tennis, Rachith actively pursues a variety of physical and intellectual interests, including rock climbing, trekking, adventure sports, swimming, yoga, gymnastics, and reading. These pursuits, he believes, have not only enriched his personal life but have also significantly contributed to his academic success. The mental clarity from yoga, the endurance from swimming, the balance from gymnastics, and the strategy and focus from tennis and climbing all feed directly into his approach to solving complex research challenges.
For Rachith, physical activity sharpens the mind. He attributes his perseverance, adaptability, and mindfulness – essential qualities for academic excellence, to his commitment to sports and adventure.
Rach…or should we say Dr. Rachith Aiyappa – very proud of you dear brother. The complexity of your research topic is lost on the simple head that rests on my shoulders but what little we’ve spoken about assures me that the results of your study can help shape the course of history tomorrow.

I remember Rachith Aiyappa very well. From CEF. we gave a special scholarship from one of the endowment funds.
He and his mother Kushy met us before he went to America.
At that time I had told him to memorise the first para of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address and also to visit Darien.
I am very happy that he has done so well academically.
