Woman dies prior to free laparoscopic sterilisation procedure

A 26-year- old woman identified as Shanthi from Boodithittu village in Periyapatna taluk died recently after arriving at the Kushalnagar Community Health centre for a free laparoscopic sterilization procedure.

District Health Officer Dr Satish Kumar said, that the deceased woman had come to her parents’ house in Madapattana and she had two children, including a two- month-old baby. She was one among the 13 individuals who came to the health centre for free sterilization procedure. As soon as she arrived at the surgery section, she became unwell. She was immediately rushed to the teaching hospital at the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KoIMS) in Madikeri. However, she passed away enroute. The exact cause of death will be known after the postmortem.

District Family Welfare Officer Dr Anand said that the woman became unwell while preparations for the surgery were underway. However, the procedure was successfully conducted on all other women who have returned home.

Since 2009, no fatalities had occurred in the sterilisation camps in the district.
