Members of the Codava National Council (CNC) under the leadership of their president N U Nachappa staged a protest against massive land conversion in Kodagu by forming a human chain in Kadanga recently.

Speaking on the occasion N U Nachappa, demanded an immediate halt to the large-scale land conversion and survey, which were detrimental to the environment of Kodagu.

He expressed concerns that the construction of settlements after such conversions would lead to the destruction of thousands of trees and water channels. He warned that if Kodavas gave into temptations offered by mafias they might lose the Kodava land.

Nachappa stressed on the need for statutory protection for the ancestral land of the indigenous Kodavas, the right to self-determination for the protection of Kodava culture, heritage and ancestral property and the establishment of Kodava land and ST status.

He demanded that the district administration release a white paper on its statement with regard to boosting tourism in Kodagu.
