Ponnappa (62), a resident of Sangayyapur village under Gangaguru Gram Panchayat, was killed in a tragic wild elephant attack when he had gone to his land for agricultural work. The incident occurred in front of his house.
Upon receiving information, ACF Gopal, RFO Shailendra, DRF Shravan Kumar, departmental officials Iranna, Venkatesh, Praveen Kumar, Ranjith, Vedamurthy, Somwarpet Police officers and Circle Inspectors visited the spot.
It is reported that the wild elephant initially attacked the family dog and subsequently attacked Ponnappa, resulting in his death. Following the incident, villagers demanded that the wild elephant be captured, adequate compensation be provided to the victim’s family, and a permanent solution be implemented to address human-wildlife conflict.
ACF Gopal, who arrived at the spot while villagers were preparing for a protest, successfully convinced them to withdraw the agitation. Addressing the gathering, ACF Gopal assured that suitable compensation would be provided to the bereaved family and that measures such as digging trenches and installing fencing would be undertaken to prevent wild elephants from straying out of the forest.
