General Kodandera Subayya Thimayya passed away while discharging the duties as the Commander of UN Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) he, unfortunately, suffered a heart attack and died on 18 December 1965.
Thimayya was the third Chief of Staff at the tender age of 51 – the first being none other than Field Marshal Cariappa at the age of 50! What an incredible achievement for a tiny community of Kodavas. CLN has written articles on the birth anniversary of General Thimayya where details of his extraordinary record of Military service can be accessed.
Dr Ravin Chegappa, a prolific poet and contributor to CLN has penned these verses on THIMAYYA OF KODAGU. – CLN Newsdesk.
In a time gone by,
In the days of yore,
In a world filled with myth,
And legends galore.
Lived a giant of a man,
With a heart of gold,
Yet nerves of steel,
And honour never bought or ever sold.
A warrior son born into,
An ancient warrior clan,
Where every family raised,
At least a single fighting man.
Strong of body, mind and soul,
Free of fear, in fun or fight,
Strong of character, always in control,
A true gentleman by day or night.
Loyal son to family and clan,
Ready to die for flag and land.
Pillar of strength to every man,
Scourge to the enemies of our sands.
Respect for his superiors,
Loyal to their command,
Leader exemplaire to the troops,
Who served under his hand.
Proud were those men,
Who fought by his side.
They had not a care,
If they lived or they died.
Be it the burning jungles of Burma,
Or the freezing wastes of the Himalayas,
He excelled in both war and peace,
From Cyprus through both Koreas’.
But alas! This valiant warrior,
And true human divine,
Was taken by fate,
Well before his time.
His legend is now writ,
For all time to behold.
In the pages of history,
In bold letters of gold.
Even though he has long passed,
Through those heavenly portals,
The world shall remember,
THIMAYYA OF INDIA-warrior immortal.
