NDA Success Demands Early Strategy and Strong Fundamentals

Selection to NDA requires adequate planning and preparation in advance to beat the pressure of multiple entrance exams during class XII.

NDA exams are conducted twice every year. Candidates Selected through NDA processes (exam, SSB Interview and medical examination) are trained for 4 years and on successful completion, as officers in Indian Army/ Navy (IN) and Airforce (IAF). Officers joining through NDA become top officers (like General/ Admiral, etc.) in defence forces due to their long duration (4 years) of training and long tenure of service since they join at young age.

Qualification requirements for vacancies under IAF and IN are “passed/ studying in PUC (Mathematics and physics ) and for other vacancies PUC under 10+2 scheme”. Exam consists of 2 papers namely MAT and SAT. MAT is mathematics paper of class XII level. SAT is a General knowledge paper consisting of physics, chemistry, biology, Constitution, History, geography etc., of class X level. Minimum marks scored by previously selected candidates is around 40%.

However several students who scored more than 80% in PUC exams do not qualify in NDA . The main reasons for this situation is the negative marks for wrong answers and requirements of higher depth of questions in NDA. Further the students of class XII are stressed due to preparation for engineering/ medical and other entrance exams. But there are specialised schools operated by defence itself for training students for NDA.

These are sainik schools and military schools. However admission to these schools are also based on specialised entrance tests in class 5 and class VII/VIII level. These entrance tests are also very competitive and require strong preparation. The challenge is to motivate young students of class 5 for competitive exams . This requires proper commitment and dedication of parents to scale up the skills of their wards. But most of the parents provide comforts to their children than competence.

But for NDA most of dedicated students (outside specialised schools) succumb to the pressure of multiple entrance preparations. It is noticed that the successful students prepare well in advance to avoid pressure. But preparation in advance requires students to learn class XII mathematics in lower classes.

This kind of preparation is possible for students through external help or coaching classes. Hence parents/students interested in joining NDA need to plan their strategies of preparation in advance. It also requires planning for PUC colleges and coaching classes together for better management of time and resources effectively. As several boys and girls aspire to join NDA, all concerned may note this and advice the aspirants accordingly.
